Navigating menopause can be confusing with all the medical terminology. Here's a clear guide to help you understand the different stages and terms related to menopause.
Perimenopause
The beginning of the menopause transition. Hormone levels fluctuate, and women may experience symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats, mood changes, and sleep disturbances. This phase usually starts between the ages of 40-45, though it can start earlier. The first sign of perimenopause is a change in your menstrual cycles; with periods becoming irregular or heavy.
Menopause
The natural point in a woman's life when menstrual periods permanently stop, defined as 12 months without a period. Menopause begins after peri-menopause, usually between the ages of 45-55. The average age of menopause in Australia is 51 and most women will have some symptoms. The symptoms are similar to what occurs during perimenopause and may also include low libido, brain fog, memory changes, vaginal dryness, skin changes and joint pains.
Postmenopause
One year and one day without a period. Symptoms may become milder during this time but can continue for some women. Without any more estrogen in your body, long-term health considerations such as bone and heart health become important.
Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI) / Early Menopause
Menopause that occurs before age 40 (POI) or between ages 40–45 (early menopause). It can result from genetic factors, autoimmune conditions, surgery, or other medical reasons.
